Your child's first swimming lesson: what to expect.

Maya Okafor

Head of teaching

The first lesson is a big day, for children and for parents. Here's exactly what happens, so nobody gets surprised.

Before you arrive

Pack a swimsuit, a towel and a snack for afterwards. Goggles are optional. Arrive ten minutes early so there's no rush in the changing room.

On the poolside

Your child's teacher will meet you at the bench by the shallow end, learn their name and show them the pool before anyone gets wet.

Nobody is ever made to put their face in the water. We wait until they want to.

In the water

  • Getting in safely, using the steps or sitting on the edge

  • Splashing games to get comfortable

  • Blowing bubbles and supported floating

Afterwards

Expect a hungry, tired and usually very proud swimmer. Ask them what their favourite game was, and tell them what you saw them do.

Free assessment

Your first lesson is on us.

Tell us a little about your swimmer and we'll book a free 20-minute assessment within 48 hours.
